Our Senior Pastor
Rev. Dr. Barbara S. Green, D.Min.
Rev. Dr. Barbara S. Green currently serves as Senior Pastor of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Memphis, Tennessee. She is a native of Georgetown, South Carolina. Dr. Green relocated from Flanders, New Jersey to Memphis, Tennessee in 1987. She accepted the call to preach in May 1990. She is an ordained Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Dr. Green is a graduate of Howard High School in Georgetown, South Carolina. She earned an Associate Degree from Durham Business College, in Durham, North Carolina. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Management from Crichton College in Memphis, Tennessee where she graduated cum laude and was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society (ASL) where she was a charter member. She received a Master of Divinity from Memphis Theological Seminary in May 2012 where she was the recipient of the African American Scholarship. Pastor Green completed her Doctor of Ministry in the Leadership Track at Memphis Theological Seminary in May 2019 with a dissertation entitled “Seeing The Heart Of God – Dreams And Visions A Means of Discernment.”
The Right Reverend Vashti Murphy McKenzie, the 117 th elected and consecrated Bishop of the A.M.E. Church appointed Dr. Green to Bethel A.M.E. Church on October 29, 2005. Prior to accepting the Pastorate at Bethel, she Pastored White’s Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church where she was the first female Pastor of that congregation. Dr. Green, also Pastored Palestine African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Dr. Green has a passion for Women in Ministry, especially married sisters. Dr. Green has a burden for Intercessory Prayer to stand in the gap for the Body of Christ. She is a visionary and has implemented numerous ministries such as Standing In The Gap Intercessory Prayer Ministry, Bethel Computer Classroom Learning Center, God’s Precious Gifts 2 Liturgical Dance Ministry for children, R.E.G.O.I.C.E. Liturgical Dance Ministry, Youth/Young Adult Bible Study, and a Leadership Summit.
Dr. Green has led Bethel in a major renovation project during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has become more active in community outreach by partnering with those who have the volunteers to touch the lives of those the congregation is unable to touch because of their size.
She retired from International Paper Company in June 2009 after 34 years of employment as a Business Specialist. Dr. Green is wonderfully married to Archie Jacob Green, Jr. for almost forty-four years. They are blessed with a daughter, Brandice who holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science Engineering. Brandice is a Scientist for the US Government and was recently recognized for her Professional Achievement – Government Award presented at the Black Engineer Of The Year Awards 2022 ceremony held in Washington, DC. Brandice is married to Brandon Rashad Weathers. Dr. Green is blessed to have two grandchildren, Braya Catherine, and Barrett Alexander.
